A day in Indonesia with clans celebrating an ancient festival!It happens once a year, and it luckily happened to be the week we were on the Island of Sumba. So we went straight there, camped on top of a hill, and the next day early morning packed our @matadorequipment bags, walked down the hill and watched the Pasola, an ancient festival where clans fight on horses with sticks to celebrate the harvesting season!Quite intense, but gosh Asia in just 3 weeks has given us so many local and people moments 🤩#landrover #defender #indonesia #worldtravel #expedition #overlanding #overland #travel #pasola #sumbaisland

Surrounded by intrigued locals in a Sumbanese villageSeriously… awesome & unique experience! We took our first ferry from Timor island and crossed after 30h to the island of Sumba in Indonesia. As we arrive, we meet up with William who has a series Land Rover and brings us around to traditional villages to greet and meet the locals, see their homes and weaving tradition of the Ikat fabric used for ceremonies.The locals have been very friendly in showing around their homes, made of bamboo and standing a meter tall above ground to clear floods. Also, in the middle of the home, are coffins, with their ancestors buried as a tradition till the whole village is ready to organize a funeral.William and his father guiding us and translating, we end up back at Albo, surrounded by the village, all curious what Albo was… so we decided to open the roof, pull out the shower and give a fun car tour, our 3m2 home, the sink, the couch, shower, and kitchen… etc which made them all laugh and very intrigued by WHY & HOW we could live like this. First night in Indonesia 🇮🇩After crossing the border from East Timor, and into Indonesia, we headed straight for the beach on west Timor. As we reach the tip of the west, we find a small track going to a small rocky cliff with a white sandy beach… just perfect! 🤩And guess what?! The water is super clean AND WARM! And this time, no crocs. At least that’s what the locals swimming told us. So we jumped in and had multiple chats with the locals which ended with a selfie.You know what that towers for next to Albo? Well little did we know, it was an overnight watch tower with a spotlight to watch over the pearl farm 200m out at sea. Thank you East Timor 🙏 you and your people have been splendid!We’ve spent a week driving around the 400km long and 100km wide country, through its nature, agriculture, wildlife… and everyone on our way has been helpful, giving waves and curious with pleasant chats. You guys rock! 🤘The kindest, safest and happiest country we’ve seen on our journey around the world so far. Colombia is a close second. But you know what… everywhere #PeopleAreGreat.Special thank you to Maria, from the gas station of Baucau, with whom we crossed paths 3 times to refill water and fuel, and at every occasion coming over say hello and calling Mathilde ‘sister’ with an excited voice, having chats in a mix of English and hand gestures.
